Fat Grafting Q & A

What is fat grafting?

Dr. Avila performs fat grafting by removing fat from one area of your body and transplanting it to another area. He removes fat via liposuction from areas you’d like to slim and then implants it into areas that have lost volume, such as your cheeks or lips.

Board-certified in plastic surgery, Dr. Avila recommends fat grafting for various reasons: fat is readily available, feels natural after grafting, and because it comes from your own body, the fat implant doesn’t cause complicated reactions.

What issues can you address with fat grafting?

Dr. Avila recommends fat grafting for various enhancements, such as:

  • Correcting scars, including acne scars
  • Volumizing sunken cheeks
  • Plumping lips
  • Reducing lines and deep wrinkles

In addition to facial procedures, Dr. Avila can use fat grafting during a buttocks augmentation procedure in lieu of traditional butt implants.

He may also suggest a fat transfer during a breast augmentation. Doctors have used fat grafting to improve breast symmetry and misshapenness for years, and using fat for a full breast augmentation is becoming more popular.

What happens during a fat grafting procedure?

During the 2-4 hour procedure, Dr. Avila starts by marking your body, indicating exactly where he plans on removing fat and where he plans on reinjecting it.

He administers local anesthesia and makes a small incision where the fat removal occurs. Using a thin tube called a cannula, he uses liposuction to harvest your fat. Dr. Avila takes special precaution not to injure your fat during the removal process, as damaged fat may not graft as well and be reabsorbed by the body.

Once he collects enough fat, he closes the incision and purifies the fat. He may use a centrifuge or a series of syringes to wash the fat tissue.

When the fat is ready, Dr. Avila implants it into your treatment area through injections. Since fat grafting is more successful when it’s performed close to blood vessels, he may make numerous small implants instead of one large implant.

After the transplant, Dr. Avila advises you to avoid massaging the area and, if you had a facial graft, limit excessive facial expressions and animations to discourage fat migration.
